We often make show curtains on the outside of the recess with Romans or Venetians inside the recess. This is particularly useful when there is a radiator under the window as you get the elegance of long curtains without them actually hanging over the radiator, and the convenience of a blind.

Don’t forget when choosing blinds that some (like rollers) are either up or down, where as blinds such as Venetians or silhouette remain down – with these you can still see out but have a certain amount of privacy.
